My children have decided that the word ‘Poo!’ is amusing! It doesn’t matter how tired, upset, happy, busy they are, this word always makes them smile and any dispute, worry or concern is gone!
This word, as much as I don’t want it said at home, really diffuses any upset that the children may have when they are both claiming they were playing with a toy first or sitting somewhere first.
We have all seen challenges in the office where meeting atmospheres become tense. There isn’t a magic word like Poo! to diffuse this when someone feels so strongly about the work that they do. But what if there was? There are more business language specialists that improve the culture in a business and allows everyone to speak a common language, remove hierarchy and drive towards better results. But what about a silly word that reminds employees that we are all human, not robots and this is business? And where it is a business, every idea is a good idea?
Once, I was talking through an emotive topic at work and the person I was talking to had explained this to numerous people before me and was starting to feel exasperated. I put my pen and paper down, sat on the meeting desk cross-legged and listened. This made him pause and move away from being defensive, it showed that I was listening but in a different way that was unexpected.
What do you think? Should we adopt the family buzz word? How do you diffuse challenging situations at work?
