Many people start their leadership journey in a sentimental date; many people are promoted in the beginning of the new year. It doesn’t matter when, it matters that the timing is right.
It’s important to have good timing as a leader and to be able to guide your team towards that.

Recently, the football club in the park behind my home had a ball caught in the branches of a very high tree during a 121 private adult coaching session. They tried a multitude of ways to bring this ball down- losing another ball in the process to those branches.
He left it, and has now managed to retrieve it after two weeks when the wind finally came and blew it down. The second ball is still in the tree- but he hasn’t attempted to take it down as he did the first time, he learned that the timing had to be right.
It sounds a small thing, but the ball is a vital part of his business. Initially, he learned from his lesson that sometimes chasing something that isn’t timed right results in a double loss. When it came to it, the lesson only took once to learn and move on from it. Besides, he coaches almost daily in the same place so won’t miss the ball falling at most.
Getting the timing right isn’t a science, but is learned through experience. The main thing is having your knowledge and others around you to recognise when this learning opportunity happens, log it and therefore not to misinterpret the perfect timing when it comes to making critical business decisions.
